JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS :

The Tactical and Autonomous Processing Department in the Undersea Systems Office (USO) of the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) is seeking a motivated and talented Autonomy Engineer to research, develop, analyze, and deliver new capabilities for the autonomous control of current and future undersea systems.

Responsibilities Include :

• Design algorithms for vehicle guidance and control, including detection, classification, tracking and decision-making


• Make substantial contributions to determining feasibility of goals / objectives; may evaluate proposed or ongoing projects


• Create opportunities to enhance technical methodology or content through expansion of existing or development of new efforts;

may extend technology into new application areas; contribute or lead in intellectual development activities

Provide innovative problem-solving approaches to enhance organizational capabilities; use peer network to expand technical capabilities and identify new research opportunities

Higher level responsibilities include :

• Understand broad strategic objectives and contribute to them; nurture and maintain relationships with major customers / grantors of external research and development grant funding


• Collaborate with USO leadership, sponsors and the technical community to plan and execute programs advancing autonomous capabilities for current and future applications


• Mentor assigned staff in the development of technical, project, and business development skills

This job will be filled at a level 3 or 4, depending upon the successful candidate's education and experience. Minimum education and experience requires a Bachelor's Degree or higher in an engineering or science related discipline plus five year's related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience for a level 3.

Additional experience and / or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs.

This position will be filled as either Research Faculty or a Research and Development Engineer.

Required skills and experience include :

• One or more of the following : MATLAB, Python, or C++


• Strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills

Preferred skills and experience include :

• A Master's degree or a PhD in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Physics, or Computer Science / Engineering


• Vehicle autonomy


• Undersea acoustics


• Object tracking and classification


• Machine learning


• Intelligent control and fuzzy logic
