Kamehameha Schools Hawaii Campus Middle School is looking for an Oiwi Learning and Teaching Mobilizer. This position will support the campus by running a "living learning lab" that models taking Oiwi moolelo and building its relevance to content standards and social justice issues of today. This position will also assist kumu in finding moolelo that match their classroom themes, connecting it to modern Hawaiian life, and teaching it in ways that are advantageous for indigenous learners.


Job Summary


Creates a collaborative environment that develops curious minds and critical thinkers, who show a high degree of creative application of data-driven curriculum and practices through an ʻōiwi lens. Collaborates with the division leadership team to provide training and coaching to faculty/staff with a primary focus upon improving curricular and instructional practices to promote student learning and program effectiveness which are deeply grounded in ʻōiwi thinking. Works closely with education division faculty, staff, leaders and partners to provide research, data, resources and tools for advancing new indigenous learning and teaching practices. Provides coaching to other educators as a subject matter expert.


Essential Responsibilities


Research & Data



  • Serves as an educational researcher for the structure, content and delivery of cultural teaching and learning, practices, protocol and systems to support indigenous curriculum with a strong focus on place-base moʻolelo. Seeks local, national and international research to improve and build on educational strategies.

  • Researches various methodologies and tools for assessment criteria and measures for indigenous learning including the integration of articulated expectations in various campus programs.

  • Contributes to the design of innovative pathways to integrate research findings into the development of professional learning and the construction of curriculum.

  • Serves as a subject matter expert for academic, scholarly and indigenous research to ensure research is integrated into project plans. Plans, organizes, and conducts research for use in understanding educational issues, historical context and indigenous perspectives for educational innovation.


Observation, Coaching, & Training



  • Works collaboratively with the campus and division instructional leadership teams and classroom kumu to achieve E Ola! Learner Outcomes through developmentally appropriate ʻŌiwi Edge learning and teaching strategies and methods.

  • Mentors kumu to support their development as highly effective educators, resulting in ʻŌiwi Edge curriculum, personalized learning practices (project/aina based, inquiry), integration of technology, and formative assessment and data literacy that improve student learning.

  • Regularly observes, demonstrates, and shares expertise with teachers, administrators and evaluators to serve as a faculty-based professional learning ʻŌiwi Edge coach and/or trainer.

  • Demonstrates competence in ʻŌiwi Edge learning and teaching and the ability to develop integrated and interdisciplinary work across the curriculum.

  • Maintains a growth mindset toward student learning, teaching practice, and personal/collective professional development.


Leadership



  • Participates with school level leadership in understanding, analyzing, and interpreting student data, as well as using those findings to improve instructional efficacy in support of World Class, Hawaiian Culture-Based Education.

  • Designs and facilitates personalized learning goals and activities to establish a culture for 'Ōiwi Edge teacher growth and professional learning for E Ola! that align with SP 2020.

  • Applies knowledge of adult learning theories with delivery of professional development and coaching strategies to create an environment that fosters innovative and creative learners who have an insatiable thirst for knowledge, personal growth, and being on the "cutting edge" of instructional practice and pedagogy.

  • Collaborates effectively with a variety of stakeholder groups within the organization and with external partners to develop curriculum that increases student performance and analyze student-achievement data, to contribute to advancing K-12 instructional efficacy.


Position Requirements


Minimum Qualifications - An equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for the requirements listed.



  • Bachelor's Degree in Hawaiian Studies, Education, Curriculum and Instruction, or closely related field.

  • Minimum 5 years of related work experience.

  • Extensive knowledge and experience in designing, delivering, and assessing the effectiveness of professional learning through indigenous epistemologies and education.

  • Very strong knowledge and experience in using research methodology and tools and quantitative and qualitative approaches to research.

  • Knowledge of basic principles, theories, and practices of education, including personalized learning, curriculum program planning and development.

  • Experience as a mentor teacher/coach/cooperating teacher.

  • Ability to analyze logically and effectively synthesize data to report findings to various stakeholders and present data for managerial decision making.

  • Ability to design, monitor, and evaluate plans, programs, and procedures.

  • Leads wrap around support staff in observations, conferencing, data and feedback, and documentation; planning for school or program improvement.

  • Very strong verbal and written communication skills to inform, educate and influence a spectrum of audiences. Ability to write technical and professional reports for decision-making in the educational field.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills for successful relationship and trust building and to deal tactfully and effectively with others.

  • Ability to facilitate small and large group work sessions.

  • Excellent working knowledge of technology and proficiency in the use of spreadsheet, word processing, data management, and presentation applications.

  • Excellent organization and time management skills to manage competing priorities. Strong project management skills and proven experience executing complex projects.

  • Ability to be flexible in work hours to address quality control issues around educational assessment and program evaluation.


Preferred Qualifications



  • Teaching certification.

  • Master's or doctoral degree in indigenous studies

  • Knowledge of K-12 curriculum, assessment, and current instructional strategies.

  • Previous experience working with teachers.

  • Recent teaching and coaching experience in primary area of responsibility.

  • Proficiency in 'ōlelo Hawaiʻi.

  • Sensitivity to and appreciation of Hawaiian cultural values.


Physical Requirements



  • Frequently sits, perform desk-based computer tasks and grasp light or fine manipulation, talk or hear.

  • Occasionally stand and/or walk, write by hand, and lift and/or carry, push and/or pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.

  • Rarely twist, bend, stoop, squat, kneel, crawl, climb, reach or work above shoulder, or grasp forcefully.


Working Conditions



  • This position may involve traveling to various locations, including neighbor islands to conduct business.

  • Work is conducted in an office environment and may require work to be conducted in non-standard workplaces.

  • Work is typically conducted Monday through Friday at normal business hours.
