Job Description

BACKGROUND:
The staff of the IRC New York Regional office work as a team to provide comprehensive resettlement services- including case management, employment and immigration services- to newly arrived refugees, asylees, and victims of human trafficking as they begin to rebuild their lives in the New York City metropolitan area. Since its inception in 1999, IRC Youth Programs have developed partnerships with New York City public schools, community-based organizations and local colleges and universities to provide refugee and immigrant youth with year-round academic support, literacy training, and enrichment activities.

SCOPE OF WORK:
IRC NY Youth Programs offer participants comprehensive and coordinated programming that is culturally and linguistically appropriate and provides high levels of individualized support. Youth Programs are comprised of five programs: the Newcomer Youth Summer Academy, School Success Coaching, Youth Tutoring, Leaders in Training and Social Emotional Learning.

The Youth Program Intern will support the administrative organization of Youth Programs, ensuring that program files and materials are kept in the best condition. They will play a key role in record keeping for all Youth Programs as well as supporting the recruitment and enrollment for the Newcomer Youth Summer Academy. The Youth Program Internship is a semester-long position and reports to the Youth Program Coordinator.

LENGTH OF INTERNSHIP: January 2022-May 2022 (with possibility to extend into summer)

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
The Youth Program Intern will support communication and coordination for general Youth Program intakes, as well as intakes for the Newcomer Youth Summer Academy. They will assist with key intake responsibilities, including intake interviews and data entry.
o Conduct outreach to families to share information about Youth Programs
o Complete intake forms with families via phone, using interpretation when necessary
o Entering client information into appropriate databases
o Communicating with Youth Programs staff to ensure effective orientation and enrollment into programs
o Manage special projects as assigned
o Support in client and family outreach
o Create and revise student recruitment materials for the Newcomer Youth Summer Academy
Revise existing flyers; creating new materials as needed
Secure translation of documents in top languages of IRC clients
Disseminate materials to schools and other recruitment partners

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: The Youth Program Operations Intern will...
1. Learn about the various management responsibilities of a complex educational program.
2. Learn about the enrollment process for IRC Youth Programs students, develop promotional materials, and work with community partners across New York City
3. Develop skills in building rapport with newly arrived immigrant students and their families


Qualifications

REQUIREMENTS:
*Minimum rising senior in college, recent graduate preferred with degree in relevant field (e.g. Management, Education, Social Work)
*Experience working in education or youth development, preferably with refugee or immigrant youth preferred
*Proficient in Microsoft computer applications, especially Microsoft Excel, as well as internet research
*Close attention to detail
*Ability to take initiative and problem-solve effectively regarding time sensitive matters
*Cultural competence and cross-cultural experience
*Strong leadership skills, supervisory experience a plus
*Strong interpersonal, and communication (verbal and written) skills
*Fluency in a second language (French, Spanish, Arabic, Pashto, Dari, Farsi, Wolof, Fulani, or Russian) a plus.
*Availability to work 15 hours per week, preference given to candidates with greater availability.
