Job Description

Appcast is currently seeking an Economics Writer with a journalism background who has a strong desire to write and report about the U.S. labor market. As Appcast’s first Economics Writer, you’ll have the opportunity to partner with our economic intelligence team to launch a new insights and education program. You will get to write like a journalist for a wide audience. You will be tasked to engage critically and creatively with economic questions using your journalism and analytical skills. You are to be non-partisan but encouraged to cover public policy and politics in relation to the U.S. labor market. Your main objective is to write economic stories with actionable insights on topics relevant to recruiters and talent acquisition professionals.


As a leader in programmatic job advertising, Appcast offers a unique opportunity to further develop your career in writing and research. Your everyday focus is data-driven insights about the U.S. labor market, from employment and wage trends to long-term impacts from demographics and technology. Teaming with economists and analysts, the Economics Writer will author a regular newsletter and medium-length blog posts. The writer will have an opportunity to write long-form, feature-length profiles about the U.S. labor market. Editing and web publishing tasks are also an important part of the job.

Job Duties/Responsibilities

  • Partner with Appcast’s lead Labor Economist to develop Appcast’s strategy to launch a new insights and education program. The goal is to tell stories from a world-class dataset
  • Become an expert at contextualizing the world of work and how it’s changing in the U.S. – how companies hire and how workers search for work, including technological and political impacts
  • Consult with members of the marketing and technology teams to discover stories with actionable insights on topics relevant to recruiters and talent acquisition professionals
  • In partnership with our web publishing and design teams, customize a Content Management System (CMS) for publishing a wide spectrum of commentary and research
  • Research and write short-form newsletter copy, as well as blog posts, whitepapers, and features
  • Edit copy from Appcast’s lead Labor Economist and members of the economics team
  • Opportunity to participate in producing content for a dedicated video channel and/or podcast
  • Create data visualizations

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Some journalism experience (extensive collegiate experience accepted); Preference for journalism experience covering business or economics news
  • Experience communicating about data and statistics
  • Experience with data visualization (making line and bar charts in Excel is sufficient)
  • Clear and engaging writing ability – a writing sample is required
