Position Purpose: As the Literary Manager & Casting Associate, you are key member of a creative, open, and focused Artistic team, and serve as one of the first and main points of contact for many artists at A.C.T.  The role of Literary Manager works closely with the Director of Dramaturgy & New Works and helps to identify and develop compelling plays for production at A.C.T. by line producing developmental workshops, reading and evaluating scripts, corresponding with agents, building and maintaining relationships with playwrights, and managing ACT’s script tracking system. As Casting Associate, you connect and deepen our relationship to the local and national acting community by overseeing our annual Equity Principal Auditions, attending shows around the Bay Area, managing auditions, and taking a leading role in casting up to 3 mainstage productions.  Always with A.C.T.’s casting core values as a foundation, you collaborate closely with key artists – such as directors, choreographers, playwrights, co-producers, and outside casting directors – to ensure that A.C.T.’s productions are cast equitably, creatively and to a high standard.   



 



Responsibilities: (please note, this list is not exhaustive, but rather a representation of job duties) 



LITERARY/NEW WORKS 





  • Manages literary submissions and oversees database; solicits scripts from agents/playwrights; assigns outside readers; provides script coverage to artistic team; maintains relationships with playwrights and agents; willingness to travel to see new work 







  • Co-Line Producer, with Director of Dramaturgy and New Works, for all Workshops & Readings 




  • Manages New Works budget (w/ Director of Dramaturgy and New Works) 




  • Assists in dramaturgical research, writing, collation (as assigned) 




  • Co-Line Producer of New Strands Festival (with Artistic team), when applicable and in operation 





CASTING 





  • For 2022-2023 season, will take a lead on casting for select mainstage shows: A CHRISTMAS CAROL, THE HEADLANDS, POOR YELLA REDNECKS; as well as readings and workshops; support from outside contractors/casting directors will be provided, as needed and within budget. 




  • Schedule and run annual Equity Principal Auditionss (online or in person) 




  • Will coordinate with outside casting directors/contractors, and lend support on mainstage productions with commercial and/or regional partnerships (SOUL TRAIN, WIZARD OF OZ). 




  • Duties include, but are not limited to: collaborating with directors, generating actor lists, making agent and actor solicitations, setting up and managing auditions, making offers (w/ general management) 




  • Regularly attend local showcases and performances to stay current on acting community; willingness to travel nationally to cover shows 





ARTISTIC COMMUNICATIONS & COORDINATION – shared equally by entire Aritstic team 





  • Shares responsibility of department budgets with Artistic team 




  • Performs various admin tasks, including but not limited to: contributing to grant narratives, Artistic office and email communications, as assigned 




  • Contributes original written material, social media posts, and program content, as assigned by Marketing and approved by Director of Dramaturgy and New Works 




Required/Minimum Qualifications or Basic Qualifications:

  • 3-5 years of professional work experience 




  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to interact comfortably with various personalities. 




  • Exemplary organization skills and attention to detail. 




  • Ability to prioritize, multi-task and take initiative. 




  • Excellent computer skills. 







  • A great candidate is a creative people-person who is able to work both independently and collaboratively with other staff members. 




  • Ability to maintain confidential information. 




  • Some night and weekend work is required. 





Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 





  • Demonstrated understanding of cultural differences.  







  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with A.C.T. colleagues and stakeholders. 




  • Knowledge of living playwrights, the local acting community, and the American theater landscape. *PLEASE NOTE: this knowledge can be gained over time and experience in the position, but a working knowledge in any of these areas is preferred. 




  • Experience in writing coverage or evaluations of scripts, productions and performances  




  • Ability to oversee and manage large group processes – ex. auditions, workshops, readings – with clear organization, time management and diplomacy. 




  • Ability to travel, locally and nationally, with regularity.
