About This Opportunity
As a Product Codes Engineer, you'll identify applicable code and regulatory requirements and facilitate gaining and maintaining regional and global product approvals and third-party certifications. Success will be achieved through the application of technical expertise with furniture, power distribution, lighting, and other products used in commercial and domestic settings.

- Obtain and maintain general product approvals, agency listings, etc., as required for products.
- Analyze proposed and existing product for codes compliance, summarize requirements, and implement conformity assessment plans.
- Support customer/sales requests for code approval information and assist in critical customer situations that involve code or standard compliance interpretations.
- Recommend solutions to diverse technical and administrative code problems to ensure timely product approvals and satisfied clients.
- Engage with the Project/Product Development team to develop test plans, technical product descriptions, and design requirements to meet commercial building requirements within the applicable codes and standards.
- Engage with suppliers, consultants, and agencies to define and clarify design requirements, test targets, and approaches.
- Coordinate and resolve noncompliance incidents to support customers' needs.
- Maintain and update a comprehensive set of requirements to ensure product safety, product quality, and conformance information for global markets.
- Determine the effect of product changes or standard revisions on conformance status.
- Document, summarize, and communicate the status of validation/conformance testing with project teams.
- Identify and communicate product performance risks and initiate plans to minimize risk.
- Provide technical product performance information in support of the business.
- Represent Herman Miller at key national codes and regulatory organizations.
- Perform additional responsibilities as requested to achieve business objectives.
You might be just who we re looking for if you have . . .
- A Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering
- Four years of professional engineering experience
- A professional engineering license (preferred).
- Knowledge of furniture standards, building codes, and regulatory requirements.
- Knowledge of product approval processes, conformity assessment and certification schemes, and third-party assessments.
- Experience with furniture testing and measurement techniques and related processes.
- Knowledge in Lean principles and their application.
- The ability to assess process concepts and determine where continuous improvement opportunities exist.
- The ability to communicate effectively with people at various levels, including Production, Engineering, and management and to work well with and develop a partnering relationship with other team members.
- Knowledge in the use of common office automation software and engineering-related software.
- Problem solving skills and the ability to apply engineering expertise to solving problems.
- The ability to assess priorities and determine a course of action with minimal day-to-day supervision and to anticipate, recognize, and respond effectively to changes which affect project plans.
- An overall business sense and an understanding of how decisions affect the business.
- Experience in product engineering, product development, standards and testing, or codes administration.
- The ability to travel throughout the US to clarify codes requirements, support codes development bodies, and/or make product presentations in support of the approval process.
- Excellent analytical skills, detail-orientation, and the ability to organize and manage multiple complex projects.
- The ability to effectively interact with and at various levels of the organization (i.e., employees, visitors, vendors).
- Knowledge of building, seismic, fire, and electrical codes.
- Knowledge of design requirements to meet commercial buildings requirements (US, FCC, NEC).
- The ability to perform all essential job functions of the position with or without accommodations.
