Job Description
TITLE: Youth Program Intern
LOCATION: Elizabeth, NJ
START DATE: September 2021
DURATION: January 2022-May 2022
BACKGROUND: The International Rescue Committee(IRC) responds to the world's worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. At work in over 40 countries and over 20U.S. cities to restore safety, dignity and hope, the IRC leads the way from harm to home.
SCOPE OF INTERN WORK: Youth Program Interns assist the Youth Program Coordinator with school enrollments, enrichment programs, and advocacy interventions for recently arrived refugee youth living in Elizabeth, NJ.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Communicate directly with recently resettled refugee youth and parents, health clinics, schools, and other community partners to ensure students' success in school
Collect medical records, school records, and other official documents to enroll newly arrived youth in Elizabeth and Roselle Public Schools
Attend and support after-school enrichment activities as needed
Conduct youth program in-takes with new clients
Present orientation to U.S. school system to newly arrived families
Support families with applying for free lunch, purchasing school uniforms, and beginning school
Arrange and attend meetings between families and teachers to support youths' needs
Track all advocacy interventions in case-note system and support with data reporting for state and federal grants
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Intern will learn how to effectively manage caseloads of youth clients
Intern will learn how to track and analyze qualitative and quantitative data regarding youth outcomes
Intern will learn how to communicate effectively across different cultures and navigate difficult conversations with clients
Qualifications
REQUIREMENTS:
Current undergraduate or graduate student, or recent graduate
Experience or interest in working with children or immigrant communities
Fluency in Arabic, Dari, Pashto, Kiswahili, Tamil, Urdu, Spanish, or French preferred
This position reports to the Youth Program Coordinator
