Requirements
Director of Media Relations and Spokesperson - Georgetown University Law Center
The Director of Media Relations and Spokesperson direct and manages the Law Center's local, national and global media relations activities, including the production and distribution of press materials; pitch stories and organize media events to promote the faculty and the Law Center; monitor and report on media coverage.
Working closely with the Executive Director of Communications, the Director develops and manages communications and messaging strategy to support the Law Center's strategic objectives; enhances and protects its reputation, and ensures consistent voice across multiple editorial platforms, including external media. They also develop and manage media strategy for the Dean, building his profile and voice among external audiences.
Additionally, they ensure communications and media activities are coordinated across Law Center activities and with main campus communications office; and direct and manage Communications office when the Executive Director is unavailable.
Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Media
- Oversee media strategy and drive daily media relations for the Law Center, field requests, and manage PR for events on campus
- Build relationships with key national, local and trade journalists; pitch stories on Law Center for coverage in media
- Oversee and manage crisis communications for the Law Center; work closely with main campus on major issues
Communications Strategy, Messaging and Public Relations
- Work with Faculty, Centers and Institutes to develop a comprehensive, collaborative communications strategy that elevates the Law Center to core audiences
- Guide development and implementation of core messages for the Institution
- Oversee outside PR support, as necessary
Promotion of Scholarship and Media Training
- Build external profile for the Dean, including op-ed and other national and trade media placements
- Assist members of the faculty in placement of op-eds and other media commentary
- Conduct media and message training for select members of senior staff and faculty
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree
- At least 10 years of experience in media relations and communications
- Deep understanding of the press, media cycle, and social media landscape
- Excellent writing, editing and oral communications skills
- Experience providing editorial oversight and supervising staff.
- Demonstrated ability to plan and execute a comprehensive communications strategy and ability to clearly communicate complex legal topics
- Ability to prioritize multiple projects in a dynamic environment with many constituencies
- Experience with latest digital media platforms, including Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn
- Familiarity with latest media and digital tracking tools, including Cision and Google analytics
Preferred qualification
Journalism and content development experience
