Blood Bank, Hematology, and Coagulation Department Supervisor
Location: Bayonne Medical Center (Bayonne, NJ)
Employment Type: Full-Time, Day Shift (8:00 AM – 4:30 PM)
Position Overview
The Blood Bank, Hematology, and Coagulation Department Supervisor is a senior clinical laboratory professional responsible for overseeing all staff and operations in the Blood Bank, Hematology, and Coagulation sections of the laboratory. This role requires a dynamic leader with at least 10 years of clinical lab experience in blood banking, hematology, and coagulation. The supervisor will ensure efficient daily lab operations, maintain compliance with all regulatory standards, and uphold the highest standards of patient care and safety. In this position, the individual will provide strong leadership and technical expertise to guide the lab team, coordinate with medical staff, and drive quality improvement initiatives across the departments.
Key Responsibilities
• Daily Operations Management: Supervise and coordinate day-to-day laboratory activities in the Blood Bank, Hematology, and Coagulation departments to ensure efficient workflow, accurate testing, and high-quality results. Monitor specimen processing and test performance to meet turnaround time targets and quality benchmarks.
• Staff Leadership and Development: Provide strong leadership for all lab staff in these sections, including scheduling, assigning duties, and overseeing performance. Manage staffing needs and human resources tasks such as hiring new employees, onboarding and training staff, conducting performance evaluations, and taking disciplinary actions when necessary to maintain high-performance standards. Mentor and support laboratory personnel to foster professional growth and a collaborative team environment.
• Quality Control & Assurance: Implement and oversee comprehensive quality control (QC) and quality assurance (QA) programs. Review QC data regularly to ensure test accuracy and reliability. Investigate any non-conforming results or quality issues, implement corrective actions, and document all findings. Ensure continuous readiness for inspections and audits by maintaining strict QA standards.
• Regulatory Compliance: Ensure full compliance with all safety protocols, infection control guidelines, and accreditation/regulatory requirements, including those set by CAP (College of American Pathologists), CLIA (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments), FDA (Food and Drug Administration), and AABB (American Association of Blood Banks). Maintain up-to-date knowledge of these regulations and prepare the laboratory for successful inspections and certifications.
• Policy Implementation and Improvement: Develop, evaluate, and update laboratory policies, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and protocols for the Blood Bank, Hematology, and Coagulation areas. Validate and verify new testing methodologies and instrumentation before implementation, ensuring they meet all standards and are properly integrated into lab operations. Stay abreast of technological advancements and recommend the adoption of new techniques or instruments to improve efficiency and service quality.
• Technical Oversight and Troubleshooting: Serve as the technical expert for blood banking, hematology, and coagulation. Address and resolve technical issues or instrument malfunctions promptly to minimize downtime. Ensure the availability and proper maintenance of all essential laboratory equipment and supplies. Coordinate equipment validations, calibrations, and maintenance schedules.
• Coordination of Clinical Services: Work closely with physicians, nurses, and other clinical staff to ensure laboratory services meet patient care needs. Oversee the reporting and communication of test results, especially critical values, to the appropriate healthcare providers in a timely manner. Act as a liaison between the laboratory and clinical departments to address questions, clarify test information, and improve interdisciplinary collaboration.
• Administrative Duties: Handle administrative and business aspects of the departments. Prepare and manage the departmental budgets and financial plans, ensuring cost-effective operations without compromising quality. Oversee payroll processes, approve timecards, and ensure appropriate staffing levels are maintained within budgetary constraints. Participate in business planning and strategy development for the laboratory services.
• Safety and Documentation: Enforce all laboratory safety procedures and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) to maintain a safe work environment. Ensure that all incident reports, safety drills, and infection control procedures are properly executed and documented. Maintain complete and organized documentation for all laboratory activities, including quality records, maintenance logs, validation reports, personnel training records, and regulatory compliance documents.
• Continuous Improvement: Identify opportunities for process improvement in workflow, testing procedures, or service delivery. Lead quality improvement projects and encourage a culture of continuous improvement among staff. Keep the laboratory’s practices up to date with industry standards and emerging best practices in laboratory medicine.
Qualifications and Requirements
• Education: Bachelor’s degree in Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, or a related field (required). A Master’s degree in a related discipline (preferred).
• Experience: Minimum of 10 years of experience working in clinical laboratory settings with a focus on blood banking, hematology, and coagulation (required). This experience should include a strong track record of technical expertise in these areas. Prior supervisory or leadership experience in a laboratory setting is highly preferred, as this role involves managing a team and multiple lab sections.
• Certification: Current ASCP certification (American Society for Clinical Pathology) or equivalent national certification (required). This certifies the candidate’s credentials as a Medical Technologist/Clinical Laboratory Scientist.
• Regulatory Knowledge: In-depth knowledge of laboratory regulatory and accreditation standards (CAP, CLIA, FDA, AABB) and experience ensuring compliance with these standards. The candidate should be familiar with preparing for inspections, maintaining regulatory documentation, and implementing any required corrective actions.
• Technical Proficiency: Extensive understanding of blood bank procedures (including transfusion services), hematology testing (e.g., CBC, differentials, morphology), and coagulation studies. Proficiency in validating and verifying new tests and laboratory instruments. Experience with laboratory information systems (LIS) and data reporting tools is also expected.
