Job Summary: We are seeking a skilled Staff Veterinarian to join our team at the Maryland Zoo. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing comprehensive medical and surgical care to our collection of animals, as well as overseeing the veterinary student externship program and Summer Research Internship.
">">The ideal candidate will have a DVM or equivalent degree, with a minimum of one year of experience in zoological medicine. They should also possess excellent communication and mentoring skills, as well as the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.Key Responsibilities:

- Clinical Care: Provide day-to-day medical and surgical care to our animal collection, including hospitalized and quarantined patients. ">
- Veterinary Student Oversight: Supervise and manage the Veterinary Externship program and Summer Research Internship, including scheduling, application process, mentorship, and evaluation. ">
- Infectious Disease Management: Oversee the implementation of infectious disease outbreak protocols and response for the Zoo. ">
- Collaboration and Communication: Participate in veterinary collaboration with outside institutions, communicate with various governmental bodies dealing with wildlife issues, and maintain compliance with USDA regulations and AZA standards. ">
Requirements:

- DVM or equivalent degree. ">
- Minimum of one year of experience in zoological medicine. ">
- Valid Maryland veterinary license, DEA license, Maryland controlled substances license, and USDA Veterinary Accreditation. ">
- Strong communication, mentoring, time management, interpersonal, and follow-up skills. ">
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment. ">
Working Conditions:

- Must be able to exert up to 70 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. ">
- Must be able to remain on feet for periods of time, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, push, pull, climb, balance. ">
- Must be able to travel large areas of the Zoo as needed. ">
- Must be able to work outdoors in all seasons. ">
