The Kimball Art Center (KAC) is an educational institution that provides international quality art exhibitions and educational opportunities for the citizens of Park City, Summit County, Wasatch County, and the region’s many visitors. Its thoughtfully curated exhibitions exemplify diversity in artistic representation, identify important contemporary issues in society, and introduce visitors to new ideas, experiences, identities, and creative practices.
Director of Communications
Reports to Executive Director.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Director of Communications will work to expand awareness and support of Kimball Art Center within the region, state, and greater art community. This person will lead marketing and communications projects on behalf of the organization in collaboration with KAC department heads and the executive director. They will develop and execute annual marketing strategies to include digital, traditional, social, earned, email, and web channels.
QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS:
5-7 years experience in the coordination of marketing, communications, public relations, journalism or related fields. Proven oral and written communication skills. Creativity, a high level of motivation, flexibility, and the ability to be collaborative and provide an analytical lens to decision-making are a must. Familiarity with museums or creative organizations. Confident public speaking skills; comfortable addressing large audiences both in person at events and via media outlets (television, radio, etc.)
Preferred: Bachelor’s degree, ideally in art/art history/arts administration, marketing, public relations or communications. Familiar with the local arts scene in Salt Lake, Utah, and Summit County. Graphic design, photography, and nonprofit experience/event management a plus.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
I. Communications
● Develop and execute an annual marketing and communications plan under the direction of the strategic plan.
● Lead messaging development on behalf of Kimball Art Center to include programs, events and institutional messaging through collaboration with the leadership team.
● Responsible for timely communication to foster community engagement.
● Identify media outlets, pitch stories, and develop press releases. Manage media coverage and advertisements in local, regional, and national publications to the museum’s targeted audiences.
● Supervise and coordinate with a board of directors committee to engage board members in dialogues about brand strategy.
● Ownership of the marketing budget to include the cost of public relations, events, collateral materials, and advertising to be allocated to the department.
● Create and maintain a relationship with local and state tourism agencies to ensure the promotion of KAC offerings.
● Seek and fulfill media requests for interviews and photos, etc.
● Ability to act as a spokesperson for the organization
● Manage PR/Marketing staff, interns, and contracted staff.
II. Marketing / Brand
● Coordinate with graphic designer to design brochures, exhibition announcements, signage, all other printed materials, images/design for electronic media (including the website, e-mail, etc.), and any paid print, broadcast, or electronic media advertisements.
● Ensure that all materials meet appropriate brand standards.
● Display an awareness of local and national museum statistics.
● Work with each department to implement marketing strategies (Education, Development, Curatorial, and Visitors Services departments to promote exhibitions, donor and member events, and museum programs.)
SKILLS
● Knowledge and willingness to learn about contemporary artistic practice and highlights of art history are important and desire for further advancement in art-related fields.
● Ability to interact with the public in a welcoming, informative, diplomatic manner
● Ability to move around gallery spaces
● Ability to photograph events and programs
● Ability to work with point-of-sale software
● Excellent computer and social media skills
● Exceptional communication skills – both written and verbal
● Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends and evening events
Salary range is $85,000 based on experience, 40 hours/week
