About the position
The T&D Engineer position at Hawaiian Electric Company involves a range of responsibilities centered around design, project engineering, project management, and general engineering duties that support the capital construction programs of the company. As a fully competent engineer, the individual will be expected to plan and conduct work that requires independent evaluation, selection, and substantial adaptation of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria. The role demands the ability to devise new approaches to problems encountered and to perform most assignments independently, with guidance provided for unusual or complex issues. The engineer will prepare plans, layouts, design calculations, and related engineering design work in accordance with company standards and applicable codes, ordinances, and regulations. In addition to design responsibilities, the T&D Engineer will engage in project engineering and management functions on major capital projects, collaborating with various government agencies to ensure compliance with rules, regulations, and permits. The role includes conducting engineering studies, preparing reports, and reviewing technical reports prepared by others. The engineer will also be responsible for preparing requests for proposals for engineering services, evaluating proposals, and making recommendations. Directing design efforts by consultants and checking designs prepared by them is also a key aspect of the job. The engineer will develop project schedules and cost estimates for inclusion in the capital budget, conduct field inspections to verify conditions, and ensure compliance with specifications, preparing reports of findings as necessary. The position also requires participation in the company's emergency response activities and adherence to the company's policies, mission, vision, and values to ensure overall success. The ideal candidate will possess a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering or an equivalent field, along with a thorough knowledge of power engineering design principles, project management, and construction methods associated with electric utility facilities, typically acquired through a minimum of five years of relevant engineering experience.

• Prepare material and equipment construction specifications for bid and evaluate proposals for purchase.

Requirements

• Working knowledge of personal computers and related software applications, including spreadsheets and word processing.

• Familiarity with City/County, State, and Federal laws, ordinances, and regulations related to projects.

• Preferred knowledge of Hawaiian Electric's Capital and O&M budget procedures.

• Experience with System Planning and Protection is preferred.

• Knowledge of business writing, accounting, economics, business law, and finance is desirable.

• Familiarity with LEAN continuous improvement principles and SafeStart principles.
Nice-to-haves
• State of Hawaii Professional Engineer License in relevant discipline.

• Experience in protective relaying systems or power systems analysis work.
