Academic Advisor

Area/Department: Academic Affairs/Registrar

Reports to: Registrar

Description:

This position specializes in academic advising for all incoming students with less than twenty-four completed credits and continuing students who are undecided. This position also provides supplemental academic advising to all university students as needed. This position works with students on academic status, in conjunction with services provided by the Registrar's Office. This position is responsible for coordinating, scheduling, and disseminating academic information to undergraduate students in a timely and professional manner. Primary skills needed to successfully perform this job include excellent communication and organizational skills.

Qualifications:

1. Bachelor’s degree required

2. Minimum of one year experience in academic support or related field

3. Experience counseling or advising students in an educational setting.

4. Interpersonal and communication skills to communicate effectively with students, faculty, staff, and the public across a wide variety of backgrounds, experiences, and identities.

5. Knowledge of educational administrative procedures related to advising and instructional processes.

6. Skills to retrieve and assemble information for the preparation of reports, schedules, correspondence etc.

7. Skills to utilize technological tools for communication, student data management, and administrative tasks.

8. Knowledge of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)

9. Knowledge of Registrar policies preferred (including, but not limited to, graduation requirements, course descriptions, transcript evaluations, catalog information, satisfactory academic progress, and other processes pertaining to academics and degree completion)

10. Proficiency in institutional database applications (e.g. Colleague, WebAdvisor, Retain, etc.)

11. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Internet applications

8. Support the overflow needs of other departments within the respective university area

9. Perform other duties in accordance with this position as deemed necessary by the immediate supervisor

Essential Functions:

1. Serve as an Academic Advisor for first year, continuing undergraduate students who are undecided and students who are on academic probation or who have been academically disqualified from the University

2. Advise new and continuing students all academic policies, catalog rights, regulation and other guidelines governing the fulfillment of their degree programs

3. Provide academic accountability for students placed on academic warning, probation, or provisional status

4. Serve as a Designated Scholl Official (DSO) for Department of Immigration

5. Advise International Student on Federal regulations and Requirements regarding VISA status

6. Act as a resource and referral for student questions and needs

7. Evaluate student Record for updates and changes (Course Subs, Equivalencies, Major Changes, Catalog Changes, etc.)

8. Transfer Credit Evaluation, Test Score posting, and Graduation Review, etc.

9. Program and Major Review; responsible for credit worksheet, four plans and assisting with credit worksheet

10. Assist with Academic Status, report, review, and contracts.

11. Assist in New Student Orientation and First Year Experience program as needed

12. Facilitate second year and transfer transition to faculty advisors

13. Assist faculty and their student advises to understand and implement student academic plans

14. Remain current with academic advising research

15. Utilize and maintain Simpson-specific advising resources including the electronic advising manual, forms, policies, procedures, reference, and training materials

16. Assist Administrative Support Staff, Assistant Registrar and Record Specialist as needed.

Related Responsibilities:

Department Liaisons

1. Liaison to Academica Affairs, training and Facilitate networking, communication, and leadership among faculty and academic support personnel.

2. Liaison to Admission working closely with admission counselors to review student records, special programs, and registration.

3. Liaison to Student Development, assisting with New Student Orientation, Housing Services, Academic Student Center, and other areas.

University Committee and Policies

4. Serve as a member of institutional committees as assigned

5. Interpret, develop, and implement policies. Administer undergraduate activities.

6. Work with leadership on program development and administration. (Participate in the maintenance and implementation of the Simpson University Strategic Plan)

7. Manage quality assessment

Job Types: Full-time, Contract
