Principal MEA Material Engineer
Status: Exempt (Salaried)

Position Summary
Plug Power is the industry leader providing hydrogen-powered fuel cell systems for material handling equipment, backup power and on-road vehicles. The Principal MEA Material Engineer will be responsible for studying, qualifying, testing, and implementing new MEA raw materials and suppliers in a rapid and deliberate manner for reduced cost, improved performance, and ease of use in our high-volume manufacturing processes. This role requires close interaction with the entire engineering organization as well as the manufacturing teams to ensure current and new MEA raw materials meet cross functional requirements. The successful candidate must be self-motivated, able to handle multiple assignments and willing to learn and adapt in a fast-paced product engineering organization.
Core Duties and Responsibilities
Work closely with the MEA Material Development Manager on development and qualification of new lower cost materials for high-volume manufacturing processes
Technical lead of current and alternative raw materials and supplier development
Investigate alternate commercial suppliers of fuel cell raw materials for reduced cost, improved performance and ease of use in the manufacturing process
Qualify alternate materials including fundamental material testing and analytical characterization, MEA design and optimization, fuel cell testing and analysis, and implementation into MEA production
Project Management: Lead material development activities from concept stage to pre-production stage, develop project plans and budgets, conduct progress reviews, assuring all safety guidelines and requirements are met and reporting progress to direct manager
Prepare progress, status and forecast reports on multiple key aspects of the assigned area of responsibility
Mentor and train team members for improving team and equipment performance
Flexibility and the ability to meet strict requirements to tight schedule
Work professionally and cooperatively in a cross-functional team environment with a focus upon maximizing system performance and customer satisfaction
Represent Plug Power in a professional manner in all interactions; support the philosophy of the organization to provide high-performing technology to maximize customer satisfaction
Perform all other duties as assigned
Exempt employees are expected to work as many hours as is necessary to complete their job responsibilities. This may require they work more than eight hours a day and more than five days or 40 hours per week.
Education and Experience
BS or MS degree in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, or other applicable field of study
Minimum of fifteen (15) years of related work history
Expertise in chemical processes and a fundamental understanding of interactions of material sets in an MEA with fuel cell stack and system operation
Demonstrated experience in materials, materials science and/or materials chemistry, particularly for engineering MEA Cell design is required
Proficiency with Microsoft Office software
Supreme organizational abilities and attention to detail
Strong verbal and written communication skills; strength in communicating complex concepts in an understandable form
Proven track record in project management; delivering quality results on-time and on budget
Dynamic interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate with diverse audiences and stakeholders at all levels
Uncompromising dedication to quality
Demonstrated analytical abilities with strong attention to detail
