About the position
At Portland General Electric (PGE), we are dedicated to creating a smarter, cleaner, and more sustainable energy future for Oregon. As a Pre-Apprentice Line Worker, you will embark on a structured training program that serves as the first step towards becoming a Journeyman Lineman. This position is essential for those looking to gain hands-on experience in the field of electrical line work. You will be part of a team that performs overhead and underground line construction and maintenance, ensuring that we provide reliable energy to our communities. The Pre-Apprentice program is designed to equip you with the necessary skills and competencies to succeed in the line worker apprenticeship. Throughout the program, you will learn safe work practices, climb poles, and work at heights of up to 90 feet, as well as in confined spaces. You will be expected to work in various weather conditions and respond to overtime needs as required. This role is not just about learning; it’s about actively participating in the essential duties of a line crew, including making up guys, installing services, and preparing transformers for installation. To qualify for this position, you must have a valid driver's license, a high school diploma or GED, and have completed Math 60 (algebra) within the last 36 months. Additionally, you will need to pass the NJATC test and demonstrate physical capability for the job, including the ability to lift over 50 lbs. As you progress through the pre-apprenticeship, you will be expected to assume additional responsibilities and may need to transfer to different departments or regions for training.
