Come spend the summer earning some extra money at the La Crosse County Solid Waste site. This seasonal role performs a variety of skilled and unskilled labor functions to maintain site conditions and assist with site services.
The position works 30-40 hours per week from now through October. Hours will fluctuate to include Monday through Friday between 8:00am and 4:00pm, and every other Saturday from 9:00am-Noon.

Assists in the operation of Household Hazardous Materials collection facility including:
•Greeting customers and scheduling appointments.
•Advising public as to proper waste handling and disposal.
•Unloading waste from customers.
•Sorting, bulking and packaging waste by category.
•Screening incoming waste for possible reuse.
•Setting up for mobile hazardous materials collection events including loading trailer, installing canopies, setting up and labeling waste containers, placing tables, collection bins, signs, tarps etc.
•Transporting waste following event completion.
•Operating a forklift.
•Performing cleaning duties, preventative maintenance and other related projects to maintain clean and orderly conditions in the HHM facilities.
•Attending training as required by supervisor.
Assists in the maintenance and upkeep of Solid Waste Department's buildings and grounds including:
•Mowing grass, applying herbicides, raking, and pruning using hand tools and powered equipment.
•Driving truck and utility vehicle (all-terrain vehicle) to haul garbage and debris
•Power washing equipment and exterior structures.
•Painting interior and exterior structures.
•Performing routine building maintenance and upkeep per schedule.
•Cleaning buildings, grounds and other assigned areas.
Physical demands: Frequently lifts 50 pounds shoulder high and carries for 20 feet and lifts 25 pounds above head. Frequently bends, climbs, reaches, grabs, lifts, pushes and pulls, stands, walks, and sits. Approximately 75% of time is spent performing various manual labor tasks lifting, pushing, pulling, carrying, using hand tools, and walking uneven terrain. Intermittently throughout the day will operate various equipment such as forklift and can crushers, push mowers, lawn mowers using hands and feet to operate controls. Uses hands to put on, wear and effectively use personal protective breathing equipment and other protective equipment. Uses oral speech to communicate clearly and concisely with customers. Uses near vision for inspecting items and reading labels. Uses near vision and fingering for entering data and operating other office equipment. Frequently drives pickup truck, with a loaded trailer. Frequent exposure to chemical fumes, hazardous materials, noise, vibrations, heat and cold. Tasks may involve exposure to blood/body fluids.
•High school education or GED which includes a chemistry class.
•Preference for college, university or technical college chemistry course work.
•Experience in solid waste, recycling, laboratory, hazardous materials handling or in a science or environmental field.
•Record of excellent customer service.
•Possess a valid driver's license.
•Must be 18 years of age.
