POSITION SUMMARY
Sandbox Films is a multi-Emmy-nominated film company that specializes in creative and boundary-breaking documentaries rooted in scientific ideas that inform society and culture. Officially launched in 2020, our films include Fire of Love (dir. Sara Dosa), All Light, Everywhere (dir. The Anthony), and Fireball (dir. Werner Herzog), and have premiered at top-tier festivals around the world – including Sundance (where we won jury prizes in back-to-back years), SXSW, Telluride, Tribeca, Toronto, and CPH:DOX. These feature-length titles have gone on to be acquired and released by the world’s largest networks & distributors — including Netflix, National Geographic Documentary Films, Apple Original Films, NEON, BBC, and PBS, among others.
Reporting to the Head of Production & Development, Sandbox Films seeks an Associate Producer who is responsible for supporting the editorial process at Sandbox Films, both creatively and administratively. The ideal candidate should bring film development and research experience as well as a genuine passion for mission-driven documentary and innovative science storytelling. This is a great position for someone hoping to advance their career in the independent film industry and gain valuable experience in documentary film development, research, financing, production, and post-production.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES
Provide direct support via calendar management, travel and shoot coordination and booking, and processing expense reports for Sandbox Films staff
Manage various databases including project tracking, festival dates & outcomes, and industry contacts/rolodex
Catalog and compile production assets, including key art, production stills, on-location stills, outtakes; maintains and updates deliverable lists
Screen film pitches and provide notes for Head of Production & Development
Screen film cuts at various stages and provide notes (as needed)
Support all aspects of film development (i.e. researching ideas, pre-interviewing subjects, optioning books, etc.)
Support film distribution efforts, working with the Distribution Producer as needed
Assist with and execute other various film development and production-related projects
In execution of all the above: collaborate efficiently; communicate clearly and proactively; treat all colleagues with respect; ask for assistance when needed; and ensure all deadlines are met
Required Skills and Experience:
At least two years’ experience in the film or production industry ideally as an Associate Producer, Development Producer, Production Coordinator and/or Researcher
Bachelor’s degree, preferred and background in film/production or science
Excellent communication skills and prior experience in fast-paced, sometimes high-stress environments
Confidence with science communication and interfacing with scientists
Meticulous attention to detail and highly process oriented
Ability to multitask and shift responsibilities quickly
Comfort in working autonomously as well as asking for information when needed
Enthusiasm about the Sandbox Films’ mission is a must
